Student online modules

We offer free, online training to help you prepare to thrive during your rural clinical placement.

Heading out on a rural placement? Ready for adventure? Get the most out of your placement by completing this series of short modules aimed at helping you prepare and be proactive about engaging with your site and supervisor. Enhance your understanding of some of the core systems and practices in clinical workplace learning environments.

These modules are available at no cost and are self-paced. Each module takes between one and three hours to complete, and you can request a certificate of completion for each module.

There are eight free modules designed for health students planning to undertake a rural placement. These modules take between one and three hours to complete and cover the following topics:

  • Why rural? Try rural! (1 hour)
  • Pre-placement preparation (1 hour)
  • Developing cultural awareness for placement and future practice (2.5 hours)
  • Electronic medical records (eMRs) (2 hours)
  • Breaking bad news (1 hour)
  • Student resilience and wellbeing (1.5 hours)
  • Leaping into Lachlan (2 hours) – for students allocated to a placement in the Lachlan area
  • Telehealth – Embracing technology in healthcare (1–3 hours).

Why rural? Try rural!

For students about to commence their first or second placement, or workplace learning experience, and any health professional or student about to embark on a rural rotation.

Pre-placement preparation

Student module to help students prepare for clinical placements, covering the pre-placement process and requirements, key expectations and professional responsibilities, site and supervisor needs, rural placement considerations, and available student support.

Developing cultural awareness for placement and future practice

This course is specifically designed to help you get started on your journey and to ensure you make the most out of every placement opportunity – specifically those in rural communities.

Electronic medical records (eMRs)

In this module you will learn the basics of electronic medical records (eMRs), your responsibilities, how to create a login and the applications most frequently used in clinical practice.

Breaking bad news

In this module you will learn how this is done in different ways and how you might best prepare yourself to observe and reflect on this type of encounter in your placement.

Student resilience and wellbeing

In this module, students will learn more about practising self-care to improve their resilience and wellbeing during clinical placement.

Leaping into Lachlan

This module is designed to help prepare and orientate you for your placement and is to be completed before you arrive in the Lachlan area.

Telehealth – Embracing technology in healthcare

This course is designed to facilitate your learning and understanding about telehealth services so that you can begin to include it in your provision of healthcare and learn more about best practice in telehealth service delivery.
