Professional development

We have clinical educators located across our regional footprint who work with students and clinicians to develop, expand and enhance quality rural placements.

Our support for clinicians working and supervising students in rural and remote health within our footprint includes:

  • providing learning and teaching resources to support clinicians supervising students on placement
  • providing opportunities to participate in educational research projects
  • supporting clinicians to attend and present at conferences
  • connecting health professionals with opportunities to develop cultural awareness
  • providing opportunities for interprofessional learning and collaboration between health professionals
  • delivery of professional development opportunities to clinicians in rural areas.

We also offer free, one-hour online professional development workshops throughout the year that are open to all clinicians.

Our suite of online, self-paced modules can be accessed at CareerLab – Rural Health Education. There are seven free modules designed specifically for rural health professionals, and you can request a certificate of completion for each module. These modules take between one and three hours to complete and cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to student supervision (1 hour)
  • Enhancing the rural placement experience (1 hour)
  • Creating an organisational culture of learning (1.5 hours)
  • Developing cultural awareness and sensitivity for health professionals (2 hours)
  • Challenging conversations (1 hour)
  • Self-care for health professionals (1.5 hours)
  • Telehealth – Embracing technology in healthcare (1–3 hours).

Going Rural Health online courses

The Going Rural Health team in Victoria also host a variety of online learning modules that are relevant to rural placements, including:

  • Supervision for service learning placements
  • Interprofessional education for rural student placements
  • Giving and receiving effective feedback.

We have compiled a list of education opportunities related to cultural awareness and responsiveness delivered by other organisations. The directory aims to promote courses that may interest health professionals and students.

With the increased use of telehealth as a health sector service, there is a recognised need for those entering the workforce to be telehealth-ready. In recognition of the particular importance of telehealth to rural clinical practice, we have a suite of telehealth initiatives and training.

Have you ever wondered about evidence-informed practice (EIP) and how best to help your students develop their skills in this area? Charles Sturt University researchers have produced EIP learning and assessment framework resources for educators and clinicians to use with their health professions students.
