Student accommodation

  • What is a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)?

A Commonwealth supported place (CSP) is a place at an Australian university or approved higher education provider where the Australian Government pays part of your fees.

This is a subsidy to reduce the cost of your course. It means that you do not pay the full course fees. It is not a loan, and you don’t have to pay it back.

Not all enrolments are allocated a CSP.

To receive Three Rivers DRH support, you must be attending university as a CSP.

  • How do I verify I am attending university as a Commonwealth supported place?

Verification of a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) is as follows:

    • For Charles Sturt University students, Three Rivers DRH will verify your CSP from university records.
    • For students from other universities, you will be required to provide one of the following as evidence:
      • A copy of your university acceptance letter or offer letter, which states you have been allocated a CSP in the course you are applying for Three Rivers DRH Support.

  • Do you support medicine or joint medical program placements?

Under our funding agreement with the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, we can only support courses set out in that funding agreement. Medicine is not one of our eligible courses.

However, we can provide placement accommodation for students studying medicine if we have a vacancy for the dates you are seeking in our off-campus properties at the market rate.

This may not be confirmed more than 2 weeks before the intended arrival date, as priority for off-campus rooms is given to eligible health students.

  • What supports are available if my placement is outside the Three Rivers DRH footprint?

Under our funding agreement with the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, we can only support placements undertaken within our geographical footprint. This condition forms part of the eligibility criteria for the subsidised accommodation and grants.

However, we are one of 19 University Departments of Rural Health (UDRHs) that provide services at locations across rural Australia. Many of these locations offer accommodation and/or other support for students undertaking a regional, rural or remote placement.

Please visit the Australian Rural Health Education Network (ARHEN) website to check if your placement is located in one of these areas.

The Map of UDRH Student Placement Support Regions is an overview of the Local Government Areas containing locations where health students on rural clinical placements may be eligible for support from participating UDRHs.

If you are a Charles Sturt student and ineligible for our financial support, please investigate other scholarships and grants available via the Charles Sturt Scholarships Office.

  • How do I know if any accommodation is available?

All requests for availability are based on an application being received.

Once submitted, room availability for the dates you are seeking will be checked, and your application will be processed.

Before submitting an accommodation application, please check the eligibility criteria.

  • What is the expected response time once I’ve submitted my accommodation application?

We receive a large number of applications. They are placed in a queue, prioritised, and processed by check-in date order.

  • What type of accommodation is provided on campus under the Three Rivers DRH program?

The accommodation provided on campus is a single student room with a bed, desk, wardrobe, and chair, as well as shared common areas and shared (unisex) bathrooms. Our subsidised accommodation does not extend to ensuite rooms.

You will need to supply your own cutlery, cups, plates and cooking utensils while on campus. A linen pack will be placed in the room for your use.

Check out our placement accommodation for more details.

  • I haven’t received my 2pm check-in email for my on-campus accommodation. What should I do?

The Three Rivers DRH office and inbox are unattended outside business hours.

Please check your junk/spam email folders. If you cannot find the email, call Charles Sturt Campus Security on 1800 931 633 for assistance.

  • When will I be charged for accommodation?

Non-Charles Sturt University students will receive an invoice before arrival. This should be paid, and evidence of payment emailed to threeriversdrh@csu.edu.au before entering the accommodation.

Charles Sturt students are charged against their student account.

  • On-campus Eduroam wi-fi connection issue?

    1.  Ensure you are using your institution’s full email address as the username and the same password you would normally use.

    2.  If this doesn’t work, try changing your password. This may refresh the account.

    3.  If this doesn’t work, ask around other students from other universities and see if they are having any problems. If not, contact your institution and ask if they can assist you.

  • Are visitors or guests permitted in off-campus accommodation?

The Three Rivers DRH Off-Campus Handbook, which you will receive a copy of with your accommodation approval email, contains details regarding guests and visitors.

You may request approval for a visitor to the off-campus accommodation, subject to the conditions outlined in the Three Rivers DRH Off-Campus Accommodation Code of Conduct. Please review the required process before seeking approval.

  • Can international, non-CSP allocated or TAFE students stay in off-campus accommodation?

As an ineligible student, you can apply to access Three Rivers DRH off-campus accommodation if there is a vacancy for the dates you require for your placement. This is limited to off-campus locations only and does not include on-campus locations (Albury, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, and Wagga Wagga).

As priority for off-campus rooms is given to eligible health students, bookings cannot be confirmed more than 2 weeks before the intended arrival date.

Stays in our off-campus properties are at the market rate. Applications are via a form not available on the website. Please email the team at threeriversdrh@csu.edu.au with your details and placements to receive a link to the application form.

  • I’m not eligible, or my placement doesn’t meet requirements. Where else can I seek accommodation?

Charles Sturt University Residence Life offers temporary accommodation to placement students on their campuses. Check their website for information about the accommodation provided.

Financial support

  • Can Placement Grant (Charles Sturt students) and Travel Support Scheme (non-Charles Sturt students) applications be backdated if I apply after completion of my placement?

Eligibility criteria state that applications must be submitted before the completion date of the placement. Applications submitted after the completion date of the placement will not be accepted.

  • I am not eligible for Three Rivers DRH grants. Can you suggest any other financial support?

Three Rivers DRH has no other financial assistance options for placement. However, you could investigate other scholarships and grants available via the Charles Sturt Scholarships Office.

  • When will I receive my Travel Support Scheme payment?

Three Rivers DRH send authority to the Charles Sturt Finance Department to pay the funds. The date the funds are deposited into your account is subject to the workload and processing delays in that department.

Unfortunately, we have no control over the date the funds reach your account, as there could also be delays within the banking system.
